How do you choose the right product? At fist couple of segments of this Video series is dealt determining your criteria, what is important to you as you buy your new roof and also we would look at special circumstances that maybe make your roof a little bit different than other roofs and could affect your decision on what type of roofing that you buy. Those things are vey important to think about at the time that you determine what sort of material/ roofing material you’re going to have installed in your roof. you may want to go back and make sure you choose a product that meets the criteria you established, you also want to make sure you buy a product that can accommodate and can work well with those special circumstances we talked about in part 2 of these Video series.
Why choose your roofing material before you choose a contractor? I am a strong believer; you want to choose your roofing material first before you choose a contractor. Let me tell you a couple of reasons, one and I talked about this before, the roofing industry have built a lot on recurring income. the roofing industry like you to get your roofing product and build/ sell you another product in 15, 16 , 17 or 18 years.
There is huge infrastructure out there of roofing manufacturers and roofing contractors and they need that recurring income to support the industry. if you rather choose your product first, if you just go to a contractor an say ” hey, what kind of product should I use?” they’ll probably in a lot of cases, not all, they’re going to stir you towards a product that they know is going to bring them recurring income to have to replace that product down the road. They’re not necessarily deceiving you. They’re just doing it because that is the way the industry works. I don’t want to necessarily say that your contractors are trying to do something really deceptive here but it is the way the industry works so they’ll probably push you towards another short term product.
The other thing that happens in a lot of times, if you go to your roofing contractor and say “hey, what product do you think I should use?”, and believe me you do want their inputs. I’m not saying you don’t want their input but a lot of times, you know they buy their products from distributors and wholesalers and a lot of times those distributors and wholesalers may have a particular shingles on sale, or they also may have a special program where if a contractor buys a certain no. of squares of that product during the course of the year or that manufactured product during the course of the year, maybe they get sent on a trip or a cruise or something like that.
Those types of things, like what’s on sale, what maybe builds them up some reward points, those types of things can determine what type of product they suggest you put on your house. I don’t know about you but I don’t know if that is the way I want it to be determined what sorts of roofing materials is going to be used on my home. we talked about your criteria in a little bit, one of your criteria may might be, hey I want a product that is going to be durable and last. I want to tell you that is really important in my book. here is the reason, I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years and one of the things that I’ve seen is the cause to re-roof your home both materials and labour doubles every 10 years. That is significant. if you buy a product Today that only last 10 years, it is going to cost twice as much to replace it in 10 years.
If you buy a product that will last in say 20 years, it is going to cost you four times as much if you are going to replace it in twenty years. It is very expensive to re-roof, its getting more expensive all the time. One of your criteria might be to choose a product that is going to get it done once in for all, get it out of your hair for your lifetime perhaps even for the life of your home rather than going through this rapidly expanding price and cycle of re-roofing every few years. If you want to get a new result from you had in the past, you’ve got to follow your criteria that you’ve determined. How do you go out and research for roofing materials, because I’m saying choose your product first. How do you do that? that is a great question.
