Installing Copper Flashing – Is it really the long term solution? Pt 2

roof flashing in CincyFlashing has to be installed over areas of the roof where shingles alone will not provide protection against water seepage. Chimney flashing is one of the most important details of a successful residential roof system. The best and most effective way to protect your roof is through using a flashing.

Tin coated steel and galvanized steel will eventually rust and corrode. The most common color for flashing is a silver-grey, which comes from aluminum or galvanized steel. Aluminum and galvanized steel are less expensive, but still effective choices. Aluminum is considered 50-year compatible, is much less costly and non-toxic, but is still not as easy to field fabricate as galvanized steel, copper and lead. Daman Pearse from Cincinnati Roofing Contractors has been using copper for many years and believes it has its place in repairing certain types of roof. A lot of residential roofs in the Cincinnati area use copper flashing. Prices for metals like aluminum, lead, and copper can go much higher. Steel can be recycled, and levels of scrapped steel are far lower than copper.

Metal roof flashing is critical for standing seam roof applications because the metal roof is not attached using screws along the panels. Copper roofing panels are available in traditional double-lock standing seam, flat seam and ornamental diamond panels. The vertical lip to the left will be locked into the standing seam copper roof to be installed along the entire porch roof. You can use a board laid flat on the roofing to get a better idea of the real slope of the roof, as shingles can be lumpy. The apron is cleated at its upper edge and is joined to the copper roof pans with a transverse seam. You may have to nail the lower edge to the roof to hold it flat.

Installing Copper Flashing – Is it really the long term solution? Pt1

copper flashingA properly installed copper roof will likely be the last roof ever installed on the building. When professionally designed and installed, a copper roof can provide an economical, long-term roofing solution. When properly designed and installed, a copper roof provides an economical, long-term roofing solution that is also both impressive and attractive. A properly installed metal roof will last well over fifty years and easily pay for its higher initial cost. Pomaville Roofing has over 60 years experience repairing, fabricating, and installing copper roofing materials. Copper sheet metal has been and continues to be a beautiful, durable roofing material.

Ken Barlow from Rochester Roofing Contractors is of the opinion that when it come to Rochester roofing projects the application of copper flashing is well worth the investment. On one of their recent projects you could see that the apron flashing is the first piece of flashing installed along the bottom side of the chimney. You can see the white base flashing rising from the roof up under the rusting counter flashing. The roofer starts at the lower spot where the flat roof meets the wall or chimney and installs flashing and shingles alternately, working upward along the roof. Typical applications include valley flashing, base flashing, counter flashing, and chimneyflashing. Enough to remove the old rusty flashing out of the chimney, but not further. The tiles must be removed to expose the original flashing metal, the metal must be fully removed, and then the new metal must be installed.

Roof flashing is the process of adding a thin layer of waterproof material to a roof that keeps water from entering your home and roof. Flashing is used to prevent water from getting under the roof and damaging the roof decking as well as the ceiling below it. There are many areas for water to penetrate on your roof.
